(으)ㄹ 수 있다 Grammar: Can in Korean with Free Worksheet

Hello! 안녕하세요. In this lesson, you'll learn how to convey "can" in Korean using the expression "V(으)ㄹ 수 있다." There's also an alternative method, and if you're interested, click here to explore my other lesson.
1. 을 수 있다 Grammar
The "수 있다" expression can be attached to a verb stem to indicate the ability to do something. So, it can be translated like "can V".
읽다 to read: 저는 한국어를 읽을 수 있어요. I can read Korean.
Since it shows the ability, you can only attach this to a verb stem. Make sure you don't use adjectives with it.
(X) 예쁘다 to be pretty: 저는 예쁠 수 있어요. I can be pretty.
2. Conjugation
Watch out for the spaces in the grammar. There are two spaces in this expression.
V(으)ㄹ(space)수(space)있다.
As the expression starts with (으)ㄹ, that means you have to pay attention to the final consonant(받침) of the stem.
Regular verbs 규칙 동사
받침 O + 을 수 있다
먹다 to eat → 먹을 수 있다
앉다 to sit → 앉을 수 있다
잡다 to catch → 잡을 수 있다
읽다 to read → 읽을 수 있다
받침 X + ㄹ 수 있다
마시다 to drink → 마실 수 있다
가다 to go → 갈 수 있다
그리다 to draw → 그릴 수 있다
하다 to do → 할 수 있다
ㄹ받침 + 수 있다
놀다 to play → 놀 수 있다
만들다 to make → 만들 수 있다
살다 to live → 살 수 있다
Irregular verbs 불규칙 동사
ㄷ받침 Change ㄷ to ㄹ and attach 을 수 있다
듣다 to listen → 들을 수 있다
걷다 to walk → 걸을 수 있다
ㅅ받침 Drop ㅅ 을 수 있다
잇다 to connect → 이을 수 있다
긋다 to draw a line → 그을 수 있다
ㅂ받침 Drop ㅂ 울 수 있다
굽다 to bake → 구울 수 있다
줍다 to pick up → 주울 수 있다
ㅎ받침 Drop ㅎ 을 수 있다
낳다 to give a birth → 나을 수 있다
있다
And then conjugate 있다 according to the tone and tense! I'll show you examples using "I can swim."
(Informal casual) 나는 수영을 할 수 있어.
(Informal polite) 저는 수영을 할 수 있어요.
(Formal) 저는 수영을 할 수 있습니다.
Here are some more examples using the past tense. "I could go."
(Informal casual) 나는 갈 수 있었어.
(Informal polite) 저는 갈 수 있었어요.
(Formal) 저는 갈 수 있었습니다.
And also, future tense. I will be able to pass.
(Informal casual) 나는 통과할 수 있을 거야.
(Informal polite) 저는 통과할 수 있을 거예요.
(Formal) 저는 통과할 수 있을 겁니다.

3. Sentence Information
1. Opposite Expression
Recall what the antonym of 있다 is? Correct, it is 없다. Similarly, the opposite of (으)ㄹ 수 있다 is (으)ㄹ 수 없다!
수영을 할 수 있다 can swim ⟷ 수영을 할 수 없다 can't swim
먹을 수 있다 can eat ⟷ 먹을 수 없다 can't eat
2. Honorific Version
It is a bit special in the honorific form. Usually, we use 계시다 for the honorific version of 있다. However, in this expression, you won't use that word! Instead, you will say 으실 수 있으시다 or 을 수 있으시다.
(X) 걸을 수 계시다.
(O) 걸으실 수 있다
(O) 걸을 수 있으시다
(O) 걸으실 수 있으시다
3. Adverb
It is often used well with the adverb "잘(well)."
저는 수영을 잘 할 수 있어요. I can swim well.
4. Examples

저는 한국어를 할 수 있어요.
I can speak Korean.
When you say you can speak a language, use the verb "하다" like 한국어를 하다. Literal meaning is "do Korean," but it means you are able to use(speak) that language.

저는 운전을 할 수 있어요.
I can drive (a car).

Q: 민지 씨는 자전거를 탈 수 있어요? Minji, can you ride a bike?
A: 네, 탈 수 있어요. Yes, I can.
Making a question with the informal polite tense is easy! You can simply attach "?" instead of "." and raise the intonation at the end.

Q: 수지 씨, 매운 음식을 잘 먹을 수 있어요? Suji, can you eat spicy food well?
A: 아니요. 못 먹어요. No, I can't.

Q: 드럼을 칠 수 있어요? Can you play the drum?
A: 네, 칠 수 있어요. Yes, I can.
치다 means to hit or to beat. So, for the instruments that require hitting, use "치다" for the verb. For example, you can say 피아노를 치다(play the piano) as you hit the keys.
