If you’re learning Korean, you’ve probably seen the endings -로서 and -로써 and wondered:

“Why are these so similar… and why do Koreans mix them up too?”

Good news: even native speakers sometimes confuse them. But the meanings are actually quite different once you understand the core idea.

This post will help you clearly understand:

  • What -로서 means

  • How to use it naturally

  • Common example sentences

  • The difference between -로서 and -로써

로서 title

1. 로서 Meaning

The grammar pattern -로서 means:

  • as

  • in the role/status of

  • as a person who is…

It expresses someone’s identity, position, qualification, or role.

2. Conjugation Information

It's pretty simple! As 로서 is a marker, you attach it to a noun, and it only has one form. You don't have to worry about 받침(the final consonant). Easy-peasy!

Noun + 로서

Examples:

  • 학생으로서 = as a student

  • 부모로서 = as a parent

  • 교사로서 = as a teacher

3. Sentence Information

There is another marker, "로써," that looks very similar to "로서".

“-로써” means:

  • by means of

  • with

  • using

  • through

It expresses:

  • method

  • tool

  • instrument

  • means

You can use 로 as well.

For example,

대화로써 문제를 해결했어요.

= 대화로 문제를 해결했어요.

= We solved the problem through conversation.

So, when you are confused about what to use, try to use "로". If it shows a tool or means, then you can use 로써. If not, then use 로서.

5. Wrap-up & Free Korean Writing Worksheet

Don't worry if you still mix up -로서 and -로써 sometimes—even native Korean speakers occasionally make this mistake! The important thing is to remember the core idea:

-로서 = role

-로써 = method

The next time you see one of these expressions, take a moment to think about what the noun represents. Is it a person’s role or status? Or is it a tool or a means to accomplish something?

Keep practicing, and you'll master this distinction before you know it. 화이팅! 😊✨
